Sports massage can be roughly divided into maintenance, recovery and preparatory massage.
Maintenance treatment is used, for example, when we need to enhance the elasticity of a muscle, soften the scar tissue of a muscle, or improve the range of motion of a joint. The timing is important, especially during competitive season. It is more common off season, but it can also be done during the competitive season if needed.
Recovery massage helps the body to recover after physical performance. This treatment can be done immediately after physical performance, but, depending on the intensity of the performance, it may be more useful after a few days. Recovery treatment is a good way for athletes to improve their performance all year round.
Preparatory massage is a treatment which is done right before performance or warm-up. It is often a lot shorter than maintenance or recovery massage.
